On Father’s Day in 1994, I surprised my dad with one of the cutest little beagle puppies that I had ever seen. The little beagle was born on a farm in Washington, New Jersey, and was the runt of the litter, the last pup left to be adopted. The farmer was an elderly gentleman and it was clear to me that he really cared who was adopting his beagle puppies. He gently placed the little pup on my lap while I shared a drink of lemonade with him and his wife. The farmer was checking me out; he wanted to be sure of me. After some time passed, the farmer stood up, gave me a little transport box for my new puppy, thanked me, and wished us well. It was then that this special little beagle became part of our family. My mom named him “Soccer” because the fur on his back was black and white and when I was carrying him into our house, mom thought I was holding a soccer ball; she didn’t know about the “surprise” for dad either.
After my parents passed in the late 90’s, Soccer came to live with my husband and I. He was still the same bundle of energy and what a personality! My husband said he was like a jumping bean and thus nicknamed him “Bean”. He brought a lot of joy to our home, and a lot of laughs.
A few months after Soccer’s 15th birthday, he was diagnosed with terminal cancer. We were devastated. He was only given 1-3 months to live. I couldn’t imagine life without him; he had been in our family for so long. Your hope for your loved ones, including your beloved pets, is that they will pass peacefully, without fear or pain. I shared the sad news with my longtime friend, Sherri Lynn; my intention at the time was to reach out for a “shoulder to cry on.” After some tears, Sherri offered to have a Reiki session for Soccer. I graciously accepted Sherri’s offer, but kept my skepticism to myself. I remember thinking, “How can it help? My poor little guy is terminally ill.”
At this stage of Soccer’s illness, he was on very potent pain medication and we were confident that he was not in any physical distress, but it seemed he could not get comfortable when he was trying to rest. When Sherri arrived, I expressed my concerns that I wanted to make the humane choices for Soccer; I did not want him to suffer. Sherri began the Reiki treatment and to my amazement, Soccer yawned and laid down next to Sherri. He fell into a deep, restful sleep. Sherri continued Reiki until, she explained, Soccer was done with the treatment. Sherri assured us that our little beagle was not in pain and he seemed to be at peace. He had returned to doing some of the things he hadn’t done in months. For instance, he rubbed his face across the carpet and rolled onto his back and wiggled around to scratch it.
It’s hard to put into words how important Sherri’s Reiki treatment was for us. Soccer lived out the rest of his days in peace and quiet; he was always able to rest comfortably following that first Reiki treatment. Thank you, Sherri, for helping me make the right choice for Soccer’s passage over the Rainbow Bridge.
